A comprehensive guide for Indian students going to UK for studies.
Today's TOI of had a small insert about counseling students desirous of studying in UK at the Oberoi hotel. Tara saw and showed it to me! It was an amazing coincidence as recently we had received a copy of a Guide on the same subject authored by Geetha Swamy and I had plans to blog about the book! The book is very well planned and excellently produced. It is a book to keep!
Studying in the UK surely is not new! It goes back to many many years. A number of our luminaries have studied in UK. To name a few, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and H.V.R Iengar, from our own Bengaluru!
I don’t know about others, those days our community actually forbade people from traveling overseas. I had heard this story from my mother. A ritual was performed after HVR’s return from UK completing his studies to become an ICS officer. She said he was covered with a gunny bag and was given a few blows with a cane. A punishment for breaking a rule or for purification! I wish I had the temerity to ask him about it.
While numbers surely run into thousands now. It was exciting memories for me as a kid when two of my close relatives, cousin B.S.Rangaraj and a cousin's husband Dr.N.K. Gopalan went to UK for studies. There would be many more!
More about our dear friend Geetha Swamy, whom we know from our Pune days. Tara and Geetha were colleagues at the Canadian International School in Bangalore. Geetha was a teacher and a counselor at CIS. She taught IB maths and Physics and continues to do so even after retirement!
She used to advice parents on how to select, enroll students etc., at school. Finally she chose to write a guide to help parents and students. I quote "As a counselor I always felt frustrated that despite an overload of books on American universities, there was none on UK universities. I quit my job and traveled extensively touring campuses and recording observations that would interest the International student. The book was born out of a deep desire to help students and young counselors who could access such information."
When I saw the guide I wondered whether such guide is available for own universities. Hope so.

Have Great & Wonderful Sunday .
Had heard of the panchagavya one! A mixture of cowdung, cow urine, ghee, curd and milk (These last 3 also cow milk products) mixed in a certain proportion, with milk being in the highest quantity... almost half litre..., curd quarter litre, urine and ghee about 50 ml each, and dung being about the size of the top segment of ur thumb. This mixture was to be taken orally, ingested.
Do you feel like throwing up now? Caning feels better?🤪
Need to read your friend Geethas book though. Have been extremely tied up
However much before HVR, from what I have read SB Ramaswamy Iyengar who passed away in 1904 was was the first Hebbar Srivaishnava subjected to "Prayaschittam" on his return from England where he had gone to qualify himself for the Bar.
even with student loans & scholarships ( by Brits).
Still reads as a useful guide for Rs 700.
Narsimha’s granddaughter went Liverpool Univ after 12+.( middle class)
And a neighbors son went to OXFORD.( parents well paid professionals).
In the OLD days, many returned to India & helped to build India.
Sri BR Narayana Iyengar went to MIT for his MS in the late 40's. P Kodanda Rao had a Canadian wife, don't know whether he had gone abroad.
