A early morning walk on and around commercial street.

I was at the Anand Lab for blood test etc., hence I had two hours between the two tests I had to take.

Had heard about the revamped Commercial Street so
 I walked towards it.
The sign even though was not at the entrance of the street
I guessed it was meant for it.
The guavas were looking good, but didn't stop to buy!
As I walked past the guava vendor
the sight of old granite didn't impress me.
However as I turned in to the street
it was a Wow!

Unbelievable and I saw that the footpath
is designed so that no cars could be parked!
(Normally it is a given that in Namma Bengaluru,
if a car can be parked on the footpath; it will be!}
(I need to check this out when com. street is open for business!)

We are used to exceptions to the rule.
Especially if it belongs to the government!
BESCOM is the worst offender!
Next are the car owners!
I guess it is beyond repair.

It was nice to see that the surrounding areas were also improved with good pavements.

Even side streets are looking better

It is understandable as it is too early in the morning
There are enough workers from BBMP collecting garbage

A few homes from the past caught my eye

This is protected by Defense

The lab.

I feel it is for the citizens to vacate the pavements.
However these hand-carts are the source of their income
so may be difficult. We adjust.
They are better than the car owners
who hog the whole footpath

Very interesting and informative - although I never had the occasion to go to Commercial st. In fact was discouraged by stories of how crowded and disorderly the surroundings were - Glad the place has been improved significantly. Re side-walk encroachments: some problems affecting people's lives are difficult to resolve on the basis of rationale (or logic).
Beyond repair..It is in our genes.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Nidhi, can you please drive to & park your car at Srilatha’s, walk down one side of Sampige Road footpath from Shiva temple till 5th Cross Circle & describe it via photos ? Then take an auto back & stop for late breakfast( or brunch) at Srilatha’s. On a non festival mid morning day.
Someone told me it took him over an hour & more!
While on Commercial street, why didn’t you stop at Woodys for breakfast ?

Getting a clear path for travel, particularly walk is difficult in India. We live cheek to jowl here. There are no wide spaces as you would have seen in the USA. Worthwhile noting that we have grown on this land over the past millenia rather than usurping lands belonging to others by hook and crook. That's why we constantly ask "solpa adjust madi"!

I don't know whether it is just my perception, but I felt that the Commercial St of yore had more class as compared to now. Perhaps it was because of less traffic earlier, as it was supposed to be only for the well heeled and there were not too many in those days.

One place we used to go long time back was a clock store - Everjoy, I think it is still there and the building is named the same. The owner was known to my uncle Sathyan, and we had the big wall clock with the pendulum which needed regular mainenance. Jayaram used to patronize Prestige, it is a huge shop now. My first pair of pants was stitched there.

Very nice effort to have gone through in and around Commercial Street. We cannot change our system.
We are tagged as Smart city.

A Picturesque walk through experience through pictures. Thanks. Any day the danDu pradesha (As the Cantonment area was called) was more upscale and kept well. Pete walk and pictures would probably paint the other part of namma Bengaluru. Let us still be optimists and hope that one day Pete will also have roads and footpaths to talk about and maintained well. (As in Cantonment area)
Mohan
Pete has spread far beyond. Kumara Park is as good or bad as chikpete
